Hotel Pick-Up & Journey into the Nazca Desert

At the designated time, your private guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in Nazca. Leaving the city behind, we travel north along the Pan-American Highway into the vast desert landscape that surrounds the Nazca Lines.

This journey offers a completely different perspective from seeing the geoglyphs from the air. From the ground, you can appreciate the environment in which these enormous designs were created and better understand their relationship with the desert, surrounding hills, and ancient cultures that once inhabited this region.

María Reiche Museum – A Lifetime Devoted to the Nazca Lines

Our first archaeological stop is the María Reiche Museum, located approximately 30 kilometers north of Nazca. This modest property was once the home of María Reiche, the German-born researcher who dedicated more than 50 years of her life to studying, measuring, mapping, and protecting the Nazca Lines.

The museum preserves photographs documenting her years of fieldwork, along with personal belongings, maps, measuring instruments, her typewriter, camera, and other objects connected with her extraordinary work in the desert.

Visitors can also see the simple house where María lived for many years while conducting her research. Beside the museum lies her final resting place; María Reiche died in 1998 and was buried here, close to the desert landscape she devoted much of her life to protecting.

Nazca Lines Observation Tower – Tree, Hands & Lizard

We then continue along the Pan-American Highway to the Nazca Lines Observation Tower, one of the few places where original Nazca geoglyphs can be clearly observed from the ground.

From the elevated platform, you will see the famous Hands, an intriguing figure whose unusual form has inspired different interpretations. Nearby lies the Tree, a large geoglyph measuring approximately 70 meters in length and traditionally associated with the huarango, a remarkably resilient tree native to the dry valleys of southern Peru.

From the tower you can also observe the surviving portions of the Lizard Geoglyph. Its story provides a striking reminder of a time before the archaeological importance of the Nazca Lines was fully understood: the figure was partially cut when the Pan-American Highway was constructed across the desert.

Your guide will help you identify the figures and explain their archaeological context while you look directly across the pampas where they were created centuries ago.

The Cat Geoglyph – An Ancient Figure on the Hillside

The journey continues to the Cat Geoglyph, a remarkable feline figure etched across the slope of a desert hill.

Its hillside location distinguishes it from many of the better-known Nazca figures created across the flat desert pampas. The Cat provides an opportunity to understand how the tradition of creating enormous images in the landscape developed over time and how ancient geoglyph makers also used the natural slopes surrounding the desert as their canvas.

From the road and designated viewing area, you will be able to appreciate the figure and its unusual position within the surrounding archaeological landscape.

Natural Hill Observatory – Across the Ancient Pampas

Our final stop takes us to a natural hill rising above the desert. A short walk to the top reveals a broad panorama across the Nazca pampas.

From this elevated position, numerous ancient lines can be seen extending across the desert in different directions. Rather than representing animals or recognizable figures, many of these designs consist of long straight lines and geometric forms stretching across the immense landscape.

Standing above the pampas provides a particularly valuable perspective on the scale of the Nazca Lines and their relationship with the surrounding mountains and desert terrain.

It is a fitting final viewpoint for understanding that the Nazca Lines are far more than a collection of individual drawings—they form part of an immense archaeological landscape created across the desert over many centuries.

Return to Nazca

After approximately three hours exploring the history, geoglyphs, and desert landscape of the Nazca Lines, we return by private vehicle to the city of Nazca.

Upon arrival, you will be dropped off at your hotel, marking the end of your Nazca Lines Tour by Land.
