Experience Overview
Journey into the Ancient Aqueducts of Cantalloc and Discover the Engineering That Brought Water to the Nazca Desert
The Cantalloc Aqueducts reveal one of the most remarkable achievements of ancient water engineering in the Nazca region—a sophisticated hydraulic system developed to sustain life and agriculture in an exceptionally dry desert environment.
Across the landscape, distinctive spiral access shafts known as puquios descend toward underground channels that carried water through the valley. Accompanied by your private guide, you’ll explore these fascinating structures while learning how water was collected, managed and directed toward agricultural areas.
The contrast is striking: arid desert surrounds fertile fields and vegetation, illustrating the vital relationship between water, agriculture and human settlement in the Nazca valleys.
More than an archaeological visit, the Cantalloc Aqueducts Tour offers a fascinating look at ancient engineering, environmental adaptation and the ingenuity that allowed communities to flourish in the Nazca Desert.

Cantalloc Aqueducts Tour from Nazca
Stop 1Ancient Nazca: Inca Heritage, Geoglyphs & Desert Engineering
Private Departure from Nazca
Your experience begins with a private pick-up from your hotel in Nazca at your chosen departure time. Accompanied by your local guide, you’ll travel into the surrounding valley to explore three archaeological sites that reveal different chapters of the region’s pre-Hispanic history.
Rather than focusing on a single monument, this tour connects Inca expansion, the mysterious Nazca geoglyphs and the ingenious management of water that made agriculture possible in this arid landscape.
Paredones – Inca Presence in the Nazca Valley
Your first stop is Paredones, an archaeological complex associated with the Inca presence in the Nazca Valley. Set above the surrounding agricultural landscape, the site preserves adobe structures, enclosures and other architectural remains.
Walk through the complex with your guide and learn about the expansion of the Inca Empire into the southern coastal valleys and the strategic role sites such as Paredones played within the wider Inca network.
Cantalloc Geoglyphs – A Nazca Trapezoid Up Close
The journey continues into the desert to a natural viewpoint overlooking the Cantalloc geoglyph sector. From here, you can observe ancient geometric markings, including a large trapezoidal form, from much closer than is possible during an aerial view of the Nazca Lines.
Your guide will explain how the geoglyphs were created by removing the darker surface stones to expose the lighter ground beneath, while introducing the principal interpretations surrounding their purpose and significance.
Cantalloc Aqueducts – Engineering Water in the Desert
The final archaeological visit takes you to the Cantalloc Aqueducts, one of the most fascinating examples of ancient hydraulic engineering in the Nazca region.
Here you’ll walk among the distinctive spiral access shafts, or puquios, and observe the channels associated with the water system. Your guide will explain how water was managed in this exceptionally dry environment and why reliable access to water was fundamental to agriculture and settlement in the Nazca valleys.
You’ll spend approximately 40 minutes exploring the area, with time to walk through the surrounding agricultural landscape and see crops cultivated in the valley today.
After exploring Cantalloc, your private vehicle will take you back to Nazca. The tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel.

Engineering the Desert: The Ancient Water System of Nazca
Water in One of the World’s Driest Landscapes
The Nazca valleys receive extremely little rainfall, making access to reliable water essential for agriculture and settlement. Ancient communities developed sophisticated ways of capturing and directing groundwater through the desert landscape.
The Puquios
One of the most distinctive features of the system is its series of access shafts, commonly known as puquios. At Cantalloc, many descend in a spiral form, allowing access to the underground channels for inspection and maintenance.
Underground Channels
Beneath the surface, carefully constructed channels carried groundwater toward areas where it could support agriculture. Building and maintaining this network required an impressive understanding of the local terrain and underground water sources.
A Living Water System
What makes Cantalloc particularly fascinating is that parts of the hydraulic system continue to serve the surrounding agricultural landscape. The green fields around the aqueducts create a striking contrast with the arid Nazca Desert and demonstrate the enduring importance of water to life in the valley.
