From the Nazca Desert to San Fernando Bay: Discover Peru’s Coastal Wilderness

Private Departure & the Coastal Desert

Your day begins at 8:00 AM with a private pick-up from your hotel in Nazca. Traveling by 4×4 toward the Pacific coast, you leave the town behind and enter an expansive landscape of sandy plains, rocky hills, and wind-shaped desert terrain.
Accompanied by a local guide, discover the geology and wildlife of this remarkable environment. The bare slopes and unusual formations create an almost otherworldly setting, revealing the stark beauty of Peru’s coastal desert.
Around 9:30 AM, we travel through guanaco territory. Keep watch among the dunes and surrounding slopes for these wild South American camelids, whose earthy coloring blends into the landscape.

San Fernando Bay & El Mirador

At approximately 10:30 AM, the desert opens toward the Pacific, revealing the cliffs and blue-green waters of San Fernando Bay. Our first stop is El Mirador, a panoramic viewpoint where you can take photographs and appreciate the striking meeting of desert and ocean.
From here, we continue on foot toward the bay. Your guide introduces you to its coastal habitats and helps you find suitable places to observe wildlife while respecting the animals and their surroundings.
Sea Lions, Coastal Birds & Humboldt Penguins
Our exploration begins at a sea lion viewpoint, with opportunities to watch groups resting on rocky outcrops or swimming through the waters below.
We then follow the rocky shoreline toward a natural rock platform overlooking the bay. Along the way, look for cormorants, pelicans, oystercatchers, and gulls, while scanning the skies for the magnificent Andean condor.
The surrounding rock formations provide rewarding opportunities for photography and birdwatching. Your guide will also help you look for Humboldt penguins in suitable coastal areas. There is time to pause, observe, and enjoy the scenery, with wildlife encounters unfolding at nature’s pace.

Lunch in the Coastal Wilderness

Around 1:00 PM, enjoy lunch within San Fernando Reserve. This relaxed break offers time to take in the coastal setting, listen to the ocean, and appreciate the landscapes explored throughout the morning.

A Final View of the Bay & Return to Nazca
After lunch, we continue by vehicle toward another viewpoint on the bay, where there may be further opportunities to observe sea lions along the shoreline. The broad coastal views provide a memorable final perspective of San Fernando.

At approximately 2:30 PM, we begin the return drive across the desert toward Nazca, arriving at your hotel at around 5:30 PM.

Route Map

An Icon of the Andes Above the Pacific

An Unexpected Setting for an Andean Icon
The Andean condor is closely associated with towering mountains and deep valleys. At San Fernando, the setting changes dramatically: desert cliffs, ocean breezes, and the Pacific stretching toward the horizon.

From Mountain Landscapes to Coastal Cliffs
Despite its name, the Andean condor’s habitat extends beyond the Andes. San Fernando offers the remarkable possibility of watching this magnificent bird along Peru’s coast, revealing a less familiar side of its natural world.

Why Condors Visit the Coast
Condors are scavengers, feeding on the remains of dead animals. Marine animal carcasses can provide food along the shoreline, while coastal cliffs offer places to rest and rising air helps them soar.

An Encounter on Nature’s Terms
Condors range freely, so sightings cannot be guaranteed. Your guide will help you scan the cliffs and skies, observing from a respectful distance and allowing any encounter to unfold naturally.
San Fernando’s condors flying over the sea are highlighted by SERNANP as one of the reserve’s attractions.
