Stop 1Into the Desert: Archaeology, Ancient Burials & Nazca Traditions
Private Departure from Nazca
Your journey begins with a private pick-up from your hotel in Nazca. Leaving the city behind, we travel south through the arid landscapes of the Nazca Desert toward Chauchilla Cemetery, located approximately 30 kilometers from town.
As the road crosses this stark desert environment, your guide will introduce you to the archaeological importance of the region and the ancient societies that inhabited the valleys of southern Peru.
Chauchilla Cemetery & the Ancient Necropolis
Upon arrival, we begin our guided exploration of Chauchilla, an extensive pre-Hispanic burial ground whose tombs provide a fascinating window into ancient funerary traditions.
Walking along the archaeological circuit, you will observe reconstructed and excavated tombs containing preserved human remains, some still displaying remarkably intact hair and traces of funerary textiles. Ceramics and other archaeological remains help illustrate how the dead were prepared and accompanied into the afterlife.
Your guide will explain the construction of the tombs, the role of the extremely dry desert environment in preserving organic material, and what archaeologists have learned from the burials discovered throughout this ancient necropolis.
Rather than simply viewing the remains, the visit provides an opportunity to understand Chauchilla within the broader cultural landscape of the Nazca valleys and to explore how ancient communities expressed their beliefs surrounding death, identity and the afterlife.
Traditional Nazca Ceramics & Return to Nazca
After leaving Chauchilla, we visit a traditional ceramic workshop, where a local artisan demonstrates techniques inspired by the extraordinary pottery traditions of ancient Nazca.
You will learn about the processes used to shape, polish and decorate ceramic vessels and see how the vivid colors and intricate motifs associated with ancient Nazca pottery continue to inspire local craftsmanship today.
Following the workshop visit, we return to Nazca and transfer you back to your hotel.

Ancient Mummification & the Afterlife in Peru
The Dead Remained Part of the Community
Across the ancient Andes, death was often understood as a transformation rather than simply an end. In several traditions, the deceased became ancestors who maintained an important relationship with the living.
Mummy Bundles & Funerary Traditions
Different cultures developed their own ways of preparing the dead. On Peru’s southern coast, Paracas burials are especially famous for mummy bundles wrapped in multiple layers of finely woven textiles and accompanied by food, ceramics, ornaments and other offerings.
Prepared for the Afterlife
Objects placed in tombs were not simply decoration. Clothing, food, pottery and personal ornaments could reflect identity and status, while also forming part of beliefs and rituals surrounding the deceased and the afterlife.
Preserved by the Desert
The extraordinary dryness of Peru’s southern coast helped preserve human remains, textiles, wood and other organic materials that would normally disappear over time. This exceptional preservation has given archaeologists a remarkable window into ancient Andean societies.
