Pampas Galeras Vicuña Tour from Nazca
Stop 1From the Nazca Desert to Pampas Galeras: In Search of the Wild Vicuña
Early Private Departure
Your journey begins with a 7:30 AM pick-up from your hotel in Nazca. Leaving the dry coastal valleys behind, we travel east toward the Andes, following a spectacular mountain road where the landscape gradually changes from desert terrain to rocky slopes and high-altitude grasslands.
As we climb higher, your guide will introduce you to the geography of this remarkable transition and the wildlife adapted to these extreme environments. Around 9:00 AM, we enter an area inhabited by wild guanacos, one of South America’s native camelids. We will keep watch along the surrounding hillsides, where there are opportunities to spot them in their natural habitat.
Pampas Galeras & the World of the Vicuña
At approximately 9:45 AM, we reach the Pampa Galeras Bárbara D’Achille National Reserve, entering a vast landscape of high-Andean grasslands where wild vicuñas can be observed roaming freely.
Here, the vicuña becomes the central story of our journey. Your guide will explain how this graceful animal is specially adapted to life at high altitude, as well as the extraordinary qualities of its exceptionally fine fiber, which has been valued in the Andes since pre-Columbian times.
You will also learn about the vicuña’s cultural importance, its relationship with Andean communities, and the conservation efforts that helped protect its populations after decades of intensive hunting. As we explore the reserve, there will be time to stop, observe the herds, take photographs, and appreciate the immense landscapes of the Peruvian puna.
Pampas Galeras Museum & Return to Nazca
Around 12:00 PM, we visit the Pampas Galeras Museum, where the experience gains additional context through exhibits related to the vicuña, other native Andean species, the surrounding ecosystem, and the history of the reserve.
Your guide will use the visit to explain how wildlife protection and traditional Andean practices have become intertwined with the modern conservation of the vicuña, providing a deeper understanding of why Pampas Galeras occupies such an important place in Peru’s natural heritage.
After the museum visit, we begin our descent toward Nazca at approximately 1:30 PM. The return journey once again reveals the dramatic transition from the high Andes to the desert valleys, arriving back at your hotel at approximately 3:30 PM.

The Chaccu: An Ancient Andean Tradition
An Ancient Vicuña Roundup
Chaccu (also spelled chaku) refers to the traditional communal roundup of wild vicuñas. Local people gradually surround and guide the animals into an enclosure where they can be carefully handled and shorn.
A Tradition from Inca Times
The Incas highly valued the vicuña for its exceptionally fine fiber. Rather than domesticating the animals, communities organized large collective roundups, sheared them, and released them back into the wild.
The Chaccu of Pampas Galeras
The tradition continues at Pampa Galeras Bárbara D’Achille National Reserve in Lucanas, Ayacucho, where local communities participate in the gathering and controlled shearing of wild vicuñas.
June 24 – A Living Andean Festival
The principal Chaccu celebration at Pampas Galeras traditionally takes place around June 24, close to the southern winter solstice and during an important period of traditional Andean celebrations.
More Than a Festival
The Chaccu is a powerful expression of the relationship between Andean communities, wild vicuñas, and the puna landscape—a tradition that has survived for centuries and remains part of the cultural identity of Pampas Galeras.

Traveler Reviews
What travelers say after discovering the wild vicuñas and high-Andean landscapes of Pampas Galeras with us.
A wonderful change from the desert around Nazca. We saw guanacos along the way and many vicuñas once we reached Pampas Galeras. The drive into the Andes was beautiful and our guide explained a lot about the wildlife and the reserve.
Seeing the vicuñas roaming freely was the highlight for us. I especially enjoyed learning about their incredibly fine fiber and the traditional Chaccu. It made the visit much more meaningful than simply seeing the animals.
The journey itself was part of the experience, watching the landscape change completely as we climbed from Nazca into the Andes. Pampas Galeras feels remote and untouched, and seeing groups of wild vicuñas in their natural habitat was unforgettable.
